New York: Op. Commander In “Arria Formula Meetings” at UN Security Council
Last 13th of June, in the UN Security Council (New York) arena, it was arranged a meeting on the subject of the “Maritime Crime as a Threat to International Peace and Security”, hosted by the Permanent Missions of Equatorial Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, the Netherlands and the United States to the UN with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The “Arria Formula Meetings” are very informal, confidential gatherings which enable Security Council members to have a frank and private exchange of views, within a flexible procedural framework, with persons whom the inviting member or members of the Council believe it would be beneficial to hear and/or to whom they may wish to convey a message. It is open to all UN Member States and accredited civil society.
EUNAVFOR Med operation Sophia Commander, Rear Admiral (UH) Enrico Credendino, provided a presentation on the operation and the migrant’s smuggling phenomenon, focusing on root causes of maritime crimes and how to address them through conflict prevention, sustaining peace and international and regional cooperation.
The meeting provided a platform for Member States to address the common and interlinked emerging crimes at sea, including piracy, arms and drug trafficking, fisheries crime, smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons. It also provided Member States with an opportunity to identify relevant good practices and challenges in international cooperation at the legal and operational levels with respect to crimes at sea.
