EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia contributes again to save lives at sea
Today, in the frame of an increased migrants flow from the Libyan coasts, EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia was requested once more to rescue people sailing in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea.
The German auxiliary ship FGS BERLIN intervened on two different rubber vessels overcrowded with migrants and contributed to save 212 lives.
After having been given first assistance on board the German ship, the migrants were transferred to a naval asset of the Italian coastguard.
Launched last 22nd of June, EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia, contributes to dismantle criminal groups involved in migrant smuggling in the southern central Mediterranean.
