Rome: 6th edition of SHADE MED
On the period from 19 to 20 June 2018, the 6th edition of Shared Awareness and De-confliction for the Mediterranean Sea (SHADE MED) was held in Rome at the Francesco Baracca Italian airbase, event in this occasion co-chaired with NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM).
SHADE MED is a forum where military and civilian representatives from nations and organizations interested in or impacted by the migratory phenomenon in the Mediterranean sea can meet to discuss and share knowledge and de-conflict to coordinate their activities to achieve the maximum efficiency and effectiveness in managing objectives related to the migratory phenomenon at sea.
The event was opened by Rear (UH) Admiral Enrico Credendino, operation SOPHIA Commander, and by Vice Admiral Hervé Bléjean, MARCOM Deputy Commander.
Operation Sophia Commander, Rear Admiral (UH) Enrico Credendino, welcomed an outstanding participation of 242 attendees, from 37 countries and 127 organizations (including 10 NGO´s) who were involved in this first SHADE MED event of 2018.
The plenary session was followed by working group panels divided into six following different thematic: Communication and information exchange systems, smugglers business model, best practice for capacity-building of the Libyan Coastguard and Navy, migration in the Central Mediterranean, Information exchange between military and commercial shipping and legal challenges related to oil smuggling.
