The European Union Politico-Military Group visits EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia
This morning the European Union Politico-Military Group (PMG) visited EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia ’s Flagship, Italian Aircraft Carrier Cavour moored in Augusta harbour.
Upon arriving on board, the delegation was welcomed by Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino , Operation Commander, who ahead of introducing a mission update briefing expressed his heartfelt condolences for the morning’s events in Brussels.
Soon after, the PMG had the chance to tour the ship and witness how the Force Headquarters staff have operated since 26 June 2015, when the Flagship joined Operation Sophia and set sail in the Mediterranean.
This event was part of a two days visit in Sicily (Italy) to European actors involved in addressing the migration crisis. Yesterday, the PMG has visited EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia ’s air assets that are stationed at Sigonella Air Base.
The Spanish aircraft VIGMA D4 was, in fact, just landing when the PMG arrived in Sigonella welcomed by EUNAVFOR MED Force Commander who, before leaving the floor to the Commanders’ of the Spanish detachment and of the Luxemburg aircraft SW3 Merlin III , underlined the difference that air assets make to the operation, saying “Also thanks to our air assets we are able to put a real pressure on smugglers“.
