The German Frigate FSG AUGSBURG joined EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia
On November 26 2015, the German frigate FSG Augsburg [179 KB]officially joined EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia.
The German ship, after having reached the port of Augusta and completed the technical procedures to have a full connection with the Flagship and the other assets of the Task force, is ready to play its role in the European mission.
The Frigate Augsburg (F-213) is a ‘Bremen’ class frigate, part of the 4thGerman Frigate Squadron, designed to provide escorts for surface ships and merchant vessels. The ship is also equipped with two Sea Lynx mk88 helicopters.
“EUNAVFOR Med Operation Sophia” was launched on the 22 of June 2015 by the European Council with the aim of countering the activities of human smugglers and traffickers in the Mediterranean. The mission is currently operating its second phase and is entitled to board, search, seize and divert smugglers’ vessels on the high seas.
