The Slovenian Ship TRIGLAV leaves EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA
After almost 5 months of deployment in the Central Mediterranean Sea as part of EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia efforts to tackle human smugglers and traffickers’ business model the Slovenian Ship TRIGLAV has left the European Task Force and is now heading back home.
Operating in a demanding open sea theatre, far from home waters, TRIGLAV showed an outstanding commitment, enthusiasm and readiness for action during long patrols at sea, sometimes in rough weather. With a crew of only 34 men and women, TRIGLAV performed at the same level as the major ships.
Results strongly highlighted by the EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia Force Commander in his farewell speech to the ship’s crew: “Whether on patrol, conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, participating in training or attending Safety of Life at Sea events, TRIGLAV has built a well-deserved and highly respected reputation for delivering a very professional performance displaying great strength and fierce determination”.
In these months the Slovenian crew, while guaranteeing the afore mentioned activities, has saved more than 400 lives conducting 7 rescue operations and has removed 9 vessels from illegal organizations’ availability.
Following a decision by the EU Political and Security Committee on 28 September, on 7 OctoberOperation EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia moved to the second phase in International Waters, where suspected smugglers vessels can be boarded, searched, seized and diverted on the high seas in accordance with the international law.
